The first season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ ended with an incredible cliffhanger that left fans with a quick need for answers. Steve Blackman , showrunner of the Netflix series, noted in The Hollywood Reporter the following about it:

The truth is, we don’t know where they are. We don’t know what happened to them. I wanted this to really be the best of the cliffhangers, where you were “Wait what, what happened? It gives us a lot of freedom to tell the best story next year. But yes, the apocalypse has not been solved. They didn’t save the world, which is a slight alteration from the comic.

Blackman knows everything Gerard Way has planned to happen, even in the comics that have not yet been published – his goal is to make eight installments and for now only three have been released – but the series has already shown that he takes a lot of liberties. compared to the original material and it will continue to be.

The only thing totally certain is that the Hargreeves are in a different place and time , where they will have to try to figure out how to fix the mess they are in. That also means having to deal with Vanya, the cause of the apocalypse and who will continue to be a threat until they find a way to help her.

The series already addressed several elements of the second comic in the first season, but it should be noted that it focuses on Number five and the murder of JFK that it has received as a mission. Whether or not the television adaptation will recover that plot is something that remains to be seen.

The Cast

In June of this year a video was published with a first script reading of the second season that confirmed what we all took for granted: the characters of Vanya ( Ellen Page ), Luther ( Tom Hopper ), Allison ( Emmy Raver-Lampman ) , Klaus ( Robert Sheehan ), Diego ( David Castañeda ), Number Five ( Aidan Gallagher ) and Ben ( Ethan Hwang ) will be in the second season.

There are many characters from the first batch of episodes that could also return, but there the Netflix series has preferred not to clarify anything, logical after the powerful outcome of the first. So we’ll have to wait to see if we will see Sir Reginald Hargreeves ( Colm Feore ), Grace Hargreeves ( Jordan Claire Robbins ), Hazel ( Cameron Britton ), Cha-Cha ( Mary J Blige ), Agnes ( Sheila McCarthy ) or The Handler ( Kate Walsh ), to name just a few.

In exchange , several signings have been confirmed : Ritu Arya – ‘Humans’ – will be Lila, a chameleonic woman with a great capacity to adapt to what a situation requires of her, Yusuf Gatewood – ‘Good Omens’ – will become Raymond, a a gifted leader and devoted husband, and Marin Ireland will play Sissy, a fearless mother who once married for the wrong reasons. All of them are characters created for the occasion that do not take as a reference any of the original comic.

The second season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ began filming in June 2019 , as confirmed by Blackman through his Instagram account. At the moment there is no news that it has come to an end.

The Trailer

We will have to be patient to see it and settle for the visit of several of its protagonists to the last New York Comic-Con. The first preview of the previous season was not released until a couple of months before the premiere of the series and it would not be unreasonable for Netflix to follow the same times for the second.

The Release Date

A great mystery , but don’t expect it to take place a year after the first one – Netflix launched it on February 15th. The reason is that Blackman commented that making the first season took them about 18 months and it seems unlikely that that time will decrease for the second. That would mean that we wouldn’t see her until August 2020 at the earliest .

Netflix has made it official that the new episodes of the series will arrive on July 31, 2020.
