5 True-Crime Documentaries You Have To Binge Watch
You’re sitting at home wondering what to watch next on Netflix? If so, the true-crime documentary niche is always an option. People can’t get enough of real-life murder mysteries. The fact that an ordinary person can go to such lengths as to kill another person makes for an interesting story. And the likes of Netflix and other streaming services can’t get enough of these stories. After all, the demand is there.
But what are the best binge-worthy, true-crime documentaries out there? If you’re out of ideas and need some help, this is the article for you.
Killer Inside: The Mind Of Aaron Hernandez
This is a three-part documentary about an NFL superstar who threw it all away. If the name didn’t give it away, “Killer Inside: The Mind Of Aaron Hernandez” looks at all the evidence and motives for Hernandez’s actions. Aaron Hernandez became a household name in 2013, but for all the wrong reasons. Freshly drafted into the NFL league with a $40 million contract by the New England Patriots, Aaron Hernandez was put on trial for murdering Odin Lloyd and two other men.
The Netflix documentary looks at why Hernandez committed these heinous crimes and dives deeper into the perpetrator’s past. The documentary, although short, sheds light on his life, his rough upbringing, and his obsession with criminal life.
Once you finish watching the documentary, you’ll know exactly why Aaron Hernandez threw it all away.
Ted Bundy: Falling For A Killer
Ted Bundy is one of the most notorious serial killers in America. A charmer who had his way with women, his actions terrorized America in the 70s. Ted Bundy is a household name in the true-crime docuseries niche of television. There have been numerous documentaries and miniseries on him, but none capture the true essence of the killer as “Ted Bundy: Falling For A Killer.”
The documentary follows Elizabeth Kendall, Ted Bundy’s girlfriend. She gives a first-hand account of the notorious serial killer and shares her experiences with him. The Prime Video documentary is a five-part series that goes into great detail. Elizabeth and her daughter tell the story of how Bundy made people love him. They talk about his deceiving tactics and making people submit to him. The documentary also gives a first-hand account of the surviving victims and the families of those he murdered.
It is by far one of the best true-crime documentaries and, no doubt, the best Ted Bundy documentary.
Marked For Murder
“Marked For Murder” is an episode of the ongoing trie-crime documentary “People Magazine Investigates.” The reason why we’ve singled out this particular episode is that fans of the show are perplexed by the story itself. Essentially, a law professor is murdered in his garage. That doesn’t sound like anything strange or out of the ordinary, you might think. But what is strange is that the murder hasn’t been caught till this very day.
The law professor, Daniel Markel, is brutally executed in his garage. This leaves his friends and family shocked. The police, initially, don’t have a suspect and think of the crime as nothing more than a burglary gone wrong. However, after thorough investigating, his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, becomes a person of interest.
The two were going through a rough divorce, and Wendi didn’t hide her feelings for Daniel. After the murder, she moved to South Florida with her kids and changed her last name from Markel to Adelson. This leaves fans asking, what is Wendi Adelson doing right now? You can get the answer to that question right here.
The episode and whole docuseries are fascinating as they shed light on cases the public hasn’t even heard of. People Magazine Investigates is five-season long and ongoing. So that gives you more than enough material to binge-watch it.
The Case Against Adnan Syed
“The Case Against Adnan Syed” is an HBO exclusive true-crime documentary that looks at Adnan Syed and his story. The four-part documentary tells the story of why Syed murdered Hae Min Lee. What’s interesting about this particular murder is that it was popularized by the “Serial” podcast. The podcast looks at true-crime murder mysteries and tries to get to the bottom of them.
HBO picked up on the story and made a documentary out of it. The documentary makes for an interesting watch, as the motives for Syed’s actions aren’t particularly clear.
Trial By Media
“Trial By Media” is a different kind of true-crime documentary. The documentary looks at why courtrooms are turning into media circuses and look at the most dramatic and memorable trials in recent history. The Netflix exclusive docu-series resembles more like a podcast with visuals. It takes a different approach from most true-crime docuseries and looks at how the media can turn a story completely on its head.
The documentary is six episodes long, but Netflix looks to extend it by another season. Unfortunately, there is no news when Netflix hopes to drop the new season.
