Rolling Stones Jann Wenner When Did Jann Wenner leave Rolling Stone?

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recently took swift action to remove Jann Wenner from its board after the co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine made controversial statements regarding Black and female artists during a recent interview.

Why Was Jann Wenner Removed from the Board?

Wenner talked with The New York Times recently about his forthcoming publication “The Masters”, set for launch on September 26. In this publication he features interviews with notable artists like Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, and Bruce Springsteen; all are white men. Wenner’s justification for not including perspectives of Black and female artists was based on his personal interest in their work. He said, “Insofar as the women, just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level.” This comment led to wide criticism and his subsequent removal from the Hall of Fame board.

Who Exactly Is Jann Wenner?

Jann Wenner’s contribution to music cannot be overemphasized. In 2004, he was honored with induction into the Rock Hall of Fame; 21 years prior he co-founded its Foundation which oversees museum construction and selection processes for inductees. Wenner’s legacy in the music industry and journalism is substantial, but these recent comments have put a blemish on his record.

How Did Wenner React to the Backlash?

Wenner responded quickly and decisively after public outrage arose. Through Little, Brown and Company (LBC), his book’s publisher, Wenner issued an official apology through one of their spokespersons. In his apology, he expressed remorse, stating, “I made comments that diminished the contributions, genius, and impact of Black and women artists, and I apologize wholeheartedly for those remarks.” He acknowledged the severity of his language and accepted the repercussions that followed.

What Does Rolling Stone Have to Say?

Rolling Stone was quick to distance itself from the controversy surrounding its co-founder. In a statement released on X, previously known as Twitter, the magazine emphasized that Wenner hasn’t been a part of its operations since 2019. The tweet elaborated that Wenner’s views did not align with the core values of Rolling Stone. The magazine has been striving to champion diversity in music, a mission they state has only strengthened since Wenner’s departure.

What Does This Mean for the Music Industry

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame quickly took action to recognize and highlight a changing climate within music. Where once white males predominated, today there is growing recognition of all forms of artists’ contributions regardless of background and gender; Wenner failed to acknowledge these artists while diminishing their significance through comments that dismissed or diminished them altogether.

The music world’s quick response also suggests a shift towards accountability. Social media amplifying voices makes it easier than ever for fans and industry peers to call out problematic views, holding both institutions and personalities accountable – such as Wenner. His contributions could not shield him from accountability.

Jann Wenner’s controversial comments and the subsequent fallout highlight the growing tension between an older guard and a new, more inclusive era of music. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be crucial for figures, both old and new, to recognize and celebrate the diverse tapestry of voices that make up its rich history.
