Best Ways to Remove Page Numbers in Microsoft Word
Our lesson today is about removing page numbers from a document in Word. The following are a few simple ways to remove page numbers from your Microsoft Word document:
How to Remove all Page Numbers in Word
Scroll down to option 4 if you would like to remove page numbers from specific pages. You will find an explanation there.
If, however, what you want to do is get rid of all the page numbers from your document, these options are listed below for your consideration. Do check out videoforwhatsapp for more such methods.
Remove Page Numbers from the Footer or Header
You can easily remove page numbers using this method. The process takes less than five seconds. It works both on Windows and Mac.
Note: When removing all the page numbers from your document, this is the method to use. If you wish, however, to remove the page numbers from the first page or maybe even the first three pages, then proceed to the next section (Option 4).
Here are the steps, without further ado:
- The page number can be found in the header or footer. If you double-click that area, the header and footer sections will become editable.
- Double-click the page number in the footer.
- Right-click is also an option. Select Edit Footer to make the footer editable.
- The page number should now be highlighted. To delete it, press the Delete key. This need not be page one. Any page of the document can be deleted.
You may now exit the Footer and Header sections by pressing the Esc key.
A single deletion of one of the page numbers will result in the deletion of every page number in the document.
Note: There might still be page numbers on some of the pages, meaning your document is divided into sections by a page break. To remove all the page numbers in that section, delete one of the page numbers in that section.
Remove the Footer in MS Word
Pages are numbered in Microsoft Word’s Headers and Footers. So, the Headers and Footers of the pages are deleted along with all the information they contain.
Note: When there is no other content in your headers or footers (such as a Letter Head), you can use this approach. All your headers and footers should have is the page numbers.
Below are the steps to follow:
- Locate the section containing the page numbers. There is a page number at the bottom of the page in the footer. A page number is also found at the top of each page in the header.
- By navigating to the Insert tab, remove the footers if the page numbers appear in the footers.
- To remove the footer, click on Footer and then Remove Footer.
- Navigate to the Insert tab to remove the Headers if the page numbers are found in the Headers.
The page numbers are also deleted after removing the Footers and Headers from your document. Page numbers can be inserted again at any time.
Use Remove Page Numbers Command
In the previous options, page numbers are simply removed as shortcuts.
In Microsoft Word, you can remove page numbers with just a few clicks using a built-in command.
This command can be used as follows:
Choose Page Number from the Insert tab under the Header & Footer section. Click the Shortcuts button. Click the Remove Page Numbers button.
You should now be able to remove your page numbers from your document with just a few clicks.
Note: A failure of this method indicates that the page numbers were entered directly into a field rather than through the Insert Page Numbers menu. If this is the case, try one of the other methods previously described.
Remove Page Number from First Page
We only showed you three methods to remove all the page numbers from your Word document in the previous three paragraphs.
The page numbers, however, do not appear on the first page of most documents and formal reports. You’re not alone if this is the case in your case.
Microsoft Word offers two methods for removing page numbers from the first page. One method is to use the Different First Page command. Another involves dividing the first page into sections. In this way, the first page can be deleted without affecting the other pages.
Different First Page Commands
If you do not wish to have a multi-section document, then you should omit the first page numbering by following these steps:
- The first page of your Microsoft Word document should be numbered.
- The Footer section can be edited by double clicking. A newly-introduced Tab labeled
Header and Footer contains all the Header and Footer commands.
- From the Header and Footer tab, select Different Page Number
- Choose Different First Page from the drop-down menu.
The first page number will disappear when this option is selected.
The following steps will also produce the same results:
- Select the Layout or Page Layout tab.
- In the Page Setup category, click the Page Setup launcher.
You should see the Page Setup dialog box.
- The Layout tab will appear once you click it.
- Check the box labeled Different first page under the Headers and Footers section.
- After clicking OK, the changes will be applied.
If you click OK, your Word document will no longer have a page number on the first page.
Using this method, you can remove the first page’s page number.
Note: The second page will start numbering from 2 once the page number has been successfully removed from the first page. Even though the first page has been hidden, it is still counted.
So, it is possible to set the numbering to start at zero (0) if that is a problem for you. That way, the first page will be zero (0), which is already hidden. On the second page, page one will appear.
Use Page Break
Breaking the first page from the rest of the pages can also be done with the break section command. By doing so, you will not affect the other pages after you delete the first one.
However, if the first page is not separated, all the pages will be deleted, regardless of whether only the page number is deleted.
Note: Besides removing page numbers for the first page of a document, you can also remove page numbers from certain parts of a document by using this technique
The following steps are outlined without further ado:
The insertion pointer will appear at the bottom of the first page when you click it.
Click on the Breaks tab when you are on the Page Layout or Layout tab. Select Next.
On the first page, a section break will be inserted. On the second page, the new section will begin.
There is now a separate section for the first page from the rest. However, it is not yet completely separated.
Disconnect The First Page from the Rest
- Go to the second page. To edit the footer, click on it twice. You will also see the headers and footers tabs.
- By clicking the Link to Previous command on the Header and Footer tab, you can unlink the second page from the first page.
- Go to the first page now. Remove the page number.
- Double-click in the header or footer area to remove the page number from the first page.
- Click on the number. Then click Delete.
Now, the first page number is removed without deleting the remaining ones.
