First Time Kayaking Tips & Tricks

If you’re looking to try kayaking for the first time, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Kayaking can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a challenging sport that takes some practice to master.

What to wear

You should wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably in the boat. You’ll want a pair of shorts or a swimsuit, a T-shirt, and a hat. Make sure to pack lots of sunscreen and bug spray because you’ll probably be in the water at some point!

What gear to use

You shouldn’t try kayaking for the first time without some gear. If you happen to live near a place where you can rent equipment, such as a boat and paddles, this is probably your best option. You should also wear a life jacket (which is required) and make sure to use sunscreen and bug spray on sunny days. Waterproof shoes are also recommended.

What to bring If you’re planning on kayaking at night

be sure to bring a headlamp and other sources of light because it can get dark pretty quickly once the sunsets. You should also bring some snacks and refreshments with you just in case!

It can be difficult to get in and out of the kayak if you don’t know what you’re doing. The trick is to bring your paddle across your chest with one hand on each end, then use them as support when entering or exiting the boat. If this still seems challenging for your first time, consider using a kayak platform or dock to step in and out of the boat.

What else do I need to know?

Be sure to practice capsizing and recovering from a capsize before your first time on the water (it’s also required by law). Also, be sure you can swim. You don’t have to be an expert, but knowing what to do in the case of an emergency is important. If you’re not sure how to swim, consider taking a beginning swimming class before your first trip (and always wear a lifejacket while boating).

Once you start kayaking regularly you’ll get the hang of it quickly and will be well prepared for your adventure. Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t get discouraged if you feel like you still have a lot to learn when you first start out. Kayaking can be tons of fun and is definitely worth the effort.

How to paddle

Paddling is one of the most important skills you can develop to become a better kayaker. It doesn’t matter if you’re paddling fast or slow, whether your boat is loaded with tons of gear or not, or how rough the water is; every kayaker should know how to paddle properly (and it’s also required by law).

Fast paddling vs. slow paddling

When it comes to kayaking there are some general rules that apply to almost every situation. One of the most important is that you should always paddle “freestyle” (meaning on your side) and at least one blade of the paddle should be in the water at all times. When paddling on one side, you should roll to that side and make sure your head is on the low side of the boat. Try to keep both hands palm up when paddling and pull them through the water like you’re moving a lawnmower. If this seems confusing, keep reading for some more tips on how to paddle properly!

When do I use fast paddling vs. slow paddling?

When you’re in calm, flat water (like a lake or river) the majority of your kayaking will be done at low speeds (either slow or moderate). When you need to go faster it’s time to up the ante and starts paddling fast! It’s important that you can make the switch between fast paddling, slow paddling, and everything in between. The great thing about kayaking is that you can take it at your own pace and in any body of water with relative safety.
