Funny Events That Occurred in the History of Casinos

Casinos are exciting places where players enjoy playing slot machines, card games etc. Not only people can play at brick-and-mortar casinos today, but they also have the convenience of playing online from the comfort of their own homes. Casinos may have come a long way from the early days, but it can be fun to look back at some funny events that took place in casino history.

The first slot machine

It was a car mechanic, Charles Fey, who invented the first slot machine in 1894. His device was called the Liberty Bell, and it featured three spinning wheels and a single pay line. The biggest payoff was fifty cents or ten nickels.

The Liberty Bell was in Charles Fey’s workshop, and customers would play on it when Fey repaired their cars. Today slot machines are still a great favorite in online casinos. Play Gun Lake is a Michigan online casino that offers a large array of online slots.

The birth of the sandwich

The fourth earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, loved gambling. Legend has it that he would ask his servants to bring him two slices of bread with meat in between so he could keep eating while still playing cards. The convenience impressed others who began to copy him, and the sandwich was born. His biographers suggest it was his long hours of work that led to the invention, but it is more fun to think that it was due to gambling.

The first Nevada gaming license

The first Nevada gaming license was granted to Mayme Stocker in 1931, and she and J.H. Morgan opened the Northern Club in 1936. It became popular, and people would come to play from all over the city. Stocker was quite a famous person and described as a good mother so not all the first casino owners were as dangerous as we may believe.

Even college students enjoy online gambling for entertainment today. Enjoying online games can help you to cope with the stress of your college days.

The first fruit symbols on slots

When Charles Fey wouldn’t sell the manufacturing or distribution rights to the Liberty Bell, Herbert Mills made a knock-off of it called the Operator Bell in 1907. The Chicago resident, a manufacturer of arcade machines, was the first person to put fruit symbols like plums, cherries and lemons on slot machines. Mills was also responsible for enlarging screens so players could see how close they were to victory, which would encourage them to play more.

Origins of the phrase ‘no dice’

You may watch funny shows where people make crazy moves to avoid being arrested by the police. Many Americans used to gamble before it was legal and play gambling games using dice. If the police unexpectedly appeared at an underground casino, the first thought gamblers had was to get rid of the evidence. Rumor has it that they would swallow the dice. Courts tended to throw gambling cases out if there were no dice in evidence.
