Getting Started in Tennis: What do I need to play?

Tennis is a fantastic sport that offers numerous health benefits and an exciting way to stay active. The game is fast, fun and is played in almost every country in the world.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience with the game, it is good to understand what items you will need to play and have a basic understanding of the game. In this article, David Harris at Tennis Pursuits explores the necessary equipment and provides some helpful tips to get you started on your tennis journey.

  1. Tennis Racket: A quality tennis racket is the most crucial piece of equipment you’ll need. When choosing a racket, consider factors such as weight, grip size, head size, and string tension. Beginners typically benefit from a lightweight racket with a larger head size, as it offers a larger sweet spot and provides more power and forgiveness. Intermediate players will be after something heavier and with more touch. When I was choosing a racket I spent time at my local sports store holding the rackets, getting comfortable with them before buying one.
  2. Grip – you’ll spend a lot of time holding a racket so make sure it is comfortable and is not worn which can lead to blisters.  We change our grip after every 10 games on average.
  3. Tennis Balls: To play tennis, you’ll need a set of tennis balls. Opt for a can of new balls to ensure consistent bounce and performance. As you progress, you’ll learn to gauge the condition of balls and rotate them during practice or matches. It’s always a good idea to have a few extra cans on hand for extended play or when balls become worn out.
  4. Proper Attire: Wearing the right clothing not only helps with performance, it helps you look and feel good on the court. Choose lightweight and breathable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Tennis-specific apparel, such as moisture-wicking shirts, shorts/skirts, and supportive shoes, will provide the necessary comfort and stability during intense rallies. A hat is a must-have item for a tennis player these days and there are plenty to choose from on the market.
  5. Tennis Shoes: Investing in a pair of tennis shoes is one of the most important things a tennis player can do. Not only can it prevent injury it will ensure optimal performance on the court as you’re constantly moving and may also play on different surfaces. Tennis shoes are designed with specific features like lateral support, cushioning, and durable outsoles that provide excellent traction on various court surfaces. Visit a specialty sports store to get fitted for tennis shoes that match your foot type and playing style.
  6. Tennis Court Access: Public tennis courts in your community are a great place to start when looking to play, which are often available for free or at a nominal fee. Many parks, schools, and recreational facilities have courts that can be reserved or used on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, consider joining a local tennis club or facility, which typically offer well-maintained courts, organized leagues, and coaching services.
  7. Finding a Partner or Coach: I was lucky to find a partner through my local club and now play with him every week. A partner will allow you to practice rallies, work on specific strokes, and engage in match play. If possible, seek out a certified tennis coach who can provide structured lessons, guidance, and feedback tailored to your skill level and goals.
  8. Learn the Basics: Before stepping onto the court, familiarize yourself with the basic rules, scoring system, and fundamental strokes of tennis. Watch instructional videos, read beginner-friendly tennis books or articles, or consider taking a beginner’s tennis class. Understanding the rules and basic techniques will boost your confidence and help you enjoy the game more.

Final Thoughts

Tennis is a fantastic game for all ages and abilities. It should not be an expensive game to get started and you can build up your equipment over time.  Ultimately all you need is a racket, a ball and an opponent to get started.
