How to Create a custom Closet

You probably need a closet makeover if you have trouble finding items in your closet while getting ready. Projects and products help you create your DIY closet design, whether you need to organize a walk-in closet for the main bedroom or a reach-in closet for a child’s room.

Measure the Area

To accurately record the closet’s dimensions, use a tape measure, pencil, and notepad.

1. Measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling.

2. Determine the length of the usable wall space. Measure the back wall of a reach-in closet. Measure the back and side walls of a walk-in closet.

3. Determine the depth of the space.

These three measurements are crucial in determining shelf depth, the amount of shelving and hardware required, and the options available.

What You Should Know

Make a note of the windows and doors and how the doors open. Mark utilities, access panels, and studs as well.

Select Your Personality

A variety of solutions are available to help you create your new closet design. The most straightforward method is to buy a kit. A closet kit allows you to choose between wood and wire in various finishes. You can buy the individual parts and design the entire closet yourself for a custom DIY closet makeover.

• Custom units can be ordered by the linear foot.

• Wall-sized prepackaged kits are available (5-foot-by-8-foot is the most common).

• Add-ons (drawers, additional shelves, ties, belt racks, hampers, and so on) provide specialized storage as needed.

Closet Organizers Made of Wire

Wire shelving and closet components are less expensive, easier to install, and can accommodate a wide range of closet dimensions. Surfaces and clothing are protected from damage by a smooth, powder-coated finish. Look for continuous sliding rods, which allow your hangers to move freely across the entire length of the bar. You’ll need the following items for a typical 4-foot-by-8-foot closet:

• Shelves with horizontal rails

• Uprights and brackets for vertical shelving

• Shelves

• Rods for closets

• Rod supports and end caps

• Corner components

• Hardware and fasteners

Closet Organizers Made of Wood

Wood closet shelving and organizers are strong, affordable, and appealing. Closet rods, drawers, and other accessories are included in these kits. When compared to wire systems, the installation is slightly more advanced. You’ll need the following items for a typical 4-foot-by-8-foot closet:

• Corner or tower units

• Shelves

• Rods for closets

• Drawers

• Hardware and fasteners

Ideas for Closet Organizing

Now that you have your measurements, it’s time to design your closet. Take into account the following:

Rods for hanging

For example, double-hang rods (for skirts, shirts, slacks, and blouses) more than double your storage space. The top rod is typically 84 inches above the floor, and the bottom is 42 inches above the floor.

Single-hang rods (for dresses, coats, robes, and so on) are typically installed 70 inches above the floor.

Shelves

If you have high ceilings, install one 85-1/2-inch shelf around the entire perimeter of your closet to maximize storage space. Shorter shelf lengths at various heights allow for more storage space in the rest of the closet. For stacked clothes, space them at least 12 inches apart vertically.

Baskets, nooks, and drawers

Baskets are great for sweaters, cubbies are great for shoes and purses, and drawers are great for socks and belts. Many closet kits are adjustable, allowing you to mix and match as needed.

Refer to the chart to efficiently plan your closet’s storage:

Important Information

Want to make the most of a corner? Consider using a corner piece with a continuous hanger rod for easy sliding on wire shelving. Run a rod to one wall in wood systems. Then, about 24 inches away from the adjacent wall, place a tower or shelves. If you want a shelf above, connect them with corner brackets.

More Organizing Options

Consider how you’ll maximize your storage and organization space after choosing and installing your closet organization system.

Ideas for Shoe Storage

Your closet system may include shoe storage (see image above). If not – or if you require additional shoe storage – consider freestanding shoe racks and organizers to keep your footwear out of the way and easily accessible. Shoe racks range from simple shelves to tower-style organizers and shelves that hold 20 or 30 pairs of shoes. Shoe cabinets, which conceal footwear behind closed doors, are also available.

Clothing Racks

A heavy-duty clothes rack an excellent addition to any closet, whether you need extra storage or convenience. Double rod models make excellent use of vertical space, allowing you to expand your closet, plan outfits, or stage several days’ worth of clothing for a trip. Shelves provide additional storage space or allow you to coordinate the accessories of an outfit. Clothes racks can be helpful for laundry as well, whether you need a place for items to air dry or an easy way to move clothes from the laundry room to a closet (if the rack has wheels).

Baby Closet Arrangement

Adjustable closet systems are ideal for baby closets or closets in children’s bedrooms—store out-of-season clothing on the top rod and frequently used items on the bottom rod. Stackable storage cubes can fill the space between the clothes and the floor, and storage bins and totes can be used to hold small items like shoes, toys, and games. Rearrange the space to accommodate more oversized clothes as your child grows, and use the storage cubes and bins elsewhere.

Install Your Closet

Gather your materials and get started on your installation. Depending on the type of wall in your closet, special hardware for anchoring shelves to the walls may be required:

• Wall anchors may be required to support drywall or paneling.

• Drilling 1/4-inch-by-1-inch holes in concrete/masonry requires a masonry bit and #8 1-inch screws.

• No anchors are required for solid wood; instead, use #8 1-inch screws.

Instead of building your shelves from scratch, you could transform your closet by installing a wood closet organizer kit. Many kits now look just as lovely as custom-built models and can hold any combination of hanging clothes, storage bins, and baskets. Some even have drawers.

Accent Wall Treatment for Your Closet

Hang wallpaper to give your closet a new look and create an eye-catching backdrop for your belongings. Choose a neutral color for a more subdued look or a bright pattern for a more vibrant look. Use peel-and-stick wallpaper to speed up installation, as Casey from “DIY Playbook” did for a guest room closet. It is now available in a wide range of designs and colors, just as appealing as traditional wallpaper.
