A lot of people use Instagram to document and share their lives with followers. Whether it’s something as simple as a great meal you had on vacation or your wedding day, there are countless images that we want to be able to keep safe. While the app offers some features for saving these photos, they’re often not enough. Here is the way you can make sure your precious memories are preserved.
If you’re an avid Instagram user with lots of followers, you might be worried about getting hacked and losing all your photos. Or maybe you want to delete your account but don’t want to lose your pictures. If that’s what you’re looking for, we can help you out. Below, we’ll show how easy it is to download photos from your phone or laptop.
Here’s how to download Instagram photos onto your phone
Although you can view Instagram on your computer, it is designed to be an app. This means that downloading photos to your phone might be easier. And if you prefer working from your phone instead of a computer, this works perfectly.
Choose the photos you want
When thinking about whose photos you want to save, consider if there are any photographs from someone else that you prefer over your own. For example, maybe you went on a trip with a close friend and they took amazing pictures that captured the experience better than yours. If this is the case, then follow these steps to download not only your photos but theirs as well.
Download your photos
To access your Instagram Settings, log into your account and go to your profile. Tap the icon with three horizontal bars at the top right of the screen to open a menu of options. Select the wheel cog icon to be taken to Settings.
On Apple devices, go to Settings, then Account, and finally Original Photos. However, if you have an Android device it will say Original Posts instead. Find the option and tap next to it so that it is turned on.
If you enable this option, all of your Instagram photos will be automatically saved to your camera roll both retrospectively and going forward. Note that Android users may experience a short delay before pictures are saved.
Download others photos
Please note that Instagram makes this exceptionally difficult. This is because it violates Instagram’s terms. To make an account, you must agree to Instagram’s customs, which most people do not know about or read before signing up.
It is crucial that you have the account owner’s permission before taking this step. Ask them, and make sure to explain how you plan on using their photos. Once you receive this permission–preferably in written form–you can continue ahead.
Take a screenshot
If you have an Apple device, cropping and screenshotting at the same time will save a copy of the image on your phone. Just crop out the caption and comments; if you’re using another type of phone, though, you might have to crop the saved image later. If that method takes too much time for you, don’t worry–there’s another way to do it.
Identify the image file
If you want to save a photo on Instagram, open the app and tap the photo. Look for the three dots displayed, and tap them. This copies the link, which you can email to yourself. Open the link in your email, then go back to the post itself. You should be able to select View Page Source from there—a new tab will open with code that may look confusing but is actually quite simple.
To save an image from Instagram, first, perform a keyword search by typing “.jpg” into the search bar. This narrows down the code to only show image files. Next, copy the entire line of text for the photo you want — it will start with “https://instagram” and end with “.jpg”. Finally, paste this copied text back into your browser’s address bar. The result should be nothing but the desired image; at this point, you can simply right-click (on a desktop) or tap and hold (on mobile) to save it onto your device.
How to download Instagram photos to your computer?
If you plan on printing this photo, downloading it to your computer first might be the more difficult route. This is because displaying and downloading photos can be easier on a phone or tablet. If you’re anything like me, you loathe having to use a tiny keyboard and screen. Unfortunately for us, though, Instagram wasn’t built to be easily used on a computer. Phone or laptop – there will always be drawbacks no matter what we choose.
Download your information
While screenshotting and cropping photos is an option, it’s not always the best one- especially if you’ve received permission to save someone else’s photos. If you’re still trying to download your own photos, though, what are some other options?
Access your account privacy
Navigate to your favorite web browser and log into Instagram. Then, click the gear icon next to the Edit Profile option on the right side of the page. This will take you to Privacy and Security. Once there, click on Account Privacy.
Request a data download
Like Facebook, Instagram provides an option for users to download all their data- this includes messages, posts, videos, and more. To access this feature on Instagram, go to the bottom of the Account Privacy page and look for the Data Download option. Once you click it, your request will be processed.
Confirm your identity
In order to start the data download, you’ll need to confirm your identity. Enter your password and email address into the provided fields. This tells Instagram who you are, that you have permission to view the data associated with this account, and where they should send it. Once all of this is completed, Instagram will send a zipped file containing your information to the email address you provided. According to their policy, this data download will be available within 48 hours. However, most users report receiving an email with their information within an hour or two after completing these steps.
Download the file
After you download the zipped file containing all your photos, it might be sizable if you frequently post on Instagram. You can save this to your laptop as a backup, but saving it in the cloud will protect against future misfortunes and guarantee that it’ll always be available.
Downloading someone else’s photos to your computer
If the account owner has given you permission, you can download their photos to your computer. However, Instagram makes it difficult to do so without authorization from the owner in order to protect against potential security breaches or unauthorized copying of personal information. If you don’t want to take screenshots, try saving photos directly.
Copy the URL and save
To save an Instagram post: first, tap on the post you want to save. Next, tap the three-dot icon. From that menu, choose “Copy Share URL.” Then, open your favorite web browser and go to that URL. Right-click on the photo to copy it and finally save the image directly!
