How to file a Singapore Citizenship Application

An application for Singapore citizenship involves a number of steps and it can be confusing if you are unsure of what to expect. The following guide will walk you through the steps and what needs to be done at each. The purpose of this guide is to aid you in understanding Singapore citizenship requirements, procedures, and timelines.

Step 1: Make sure you’re eligible

You can apply for Singapore citizenship if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • Prior to applying for residency, a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) must be at least 21 years old and have lived in Singapore for at least two to six years.
  • A Singapore Citizen who has held PR for at least 2 years and has been married for at least 2 years prior to application submission.
  • Parents who are Singapore citizens but their children were born outside Singapore.

This guide provides information about how to file citizenship applications for individuals in the first category listed above.

Your Singapore citizenship application will be significantly influenced by the following factors in addition to those listed above:

  • Residence history in Singapore during the period when you were a permanent resident.
  • The integrity of your character and your compliance with the law
  • An indication that you plan to stay a long time in Singapore based on your social and financial investment into Singapore.
  • Singapore needs someone like you to be an asset, not a liability. You can measure your overall financial strength by your ability to generate income for yourself and your family (whether you are employed or own a business).

Step : 2 Prepation of the Application and the supporting documentation:

All of the documents you download will help you with the preparation of the application form and all supporting documents. Ensure that each document has an original, a photocopy, and a copy. It is usually necessary for you to prepare the following documents:

  • Existing passport
  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate; Divorce Certificate; Separation Deed
  • PR card and PR certificate
  • Educational certificates (high school and above)
  • Death Certificate of ex-spouse, proof of child/children’s custody from previous marriage, if applicable
  • Deed Poll or Religious Certificate for change of name, if any
  • Foreign citizenship certificate
  • A letter of employment from current employer
  • Income tax notice of assessment for last 3 years
  • Pay slips for last 6 months and CPF contributions history for last 12 months, if employed
  • Latest ACRA business profile and balance sheet/profit and loss account of your business in case you are a business owner

Along with your application for citizenship, you can file citizenship applications for your spouse and children who are also permanent residents. This case will result in you being considered the applicant’s sponsor. The applications will be approved or rejected simultaneously. Documents similar to those above will be needed by your spouse. It is essential that you provide passports, birth certificates, and permanent resident certificates for your children.

Furthermore, the following additional documents can also be very helpful in addition to those listed in the citizenship application:

It’s good idea to include a cover letter along with the application that summarizes key points of your application (why you have decided to apply for Singapore citizenship, the roots you have established in Singapore, your financial strength, and other positive factors about your application)

  • Be sure to include proof of any properties you have purchased in Singapore.
  • Include evidence of your financial assets if you have any.

Step 3: Procedures for applications

To submit your citizenship application, you will need to submit the supporting documents and complete the citizenship application form:

  • The application must be submitted electronically through e-SC (Electronic Singapore Citizenship Application). Your appointment date will be selected after you submit your s-SC application.
  • Complete and attach all supporting documents to the Citizenship Application form. After that, schedule a date for submitting the application to ICA via the Electronic Appointment Booking System. You must follow this step in order to submit your application at ICA in person.

Step 4: Outcome of Application

In most cases, your Singapore citizenship application filing will take between six and twelve months to be processed. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via regular postal mail.

Step 5: A Singapore Citizen’s Oath and Citizenship

ICA office must be visited to take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance, and Loyalty when you receive the citizenship approval letter as above. You will find on the approval letter details of when the oath taking event will take place as well as which documents you will need to bring.

Step 6: The Ceremony of Citizenship

You’ll receive another letter within 3-4 months asking you to attend a Citizenship Ceremony at your nearest community center. New citizens are welcomed at the citizenship ceremony. Infants, elderly, or handicapped adults are not required to attend. Taking part in this event is a group decision, which means that all new residents will participate together. A state minister and the local MP usually attend the event, which lasts about two hours.

The next step in your Singapore citizenship is to become a full citizen. Congratulations.

Bottom line

You want to make sure your application form is correct, and leaving anything out or making any mistakes could result in your application being rejected.

Many people find that keeping a checklist of everything you need to do to make sure you are eligible and follow up on it helps them. A consent form should always be filled out correctly, including all the required information. You may overlook something like the consent form while searching for all the documents because it is not a form that you work with regularly.
