John James Luther Sorensen was an esteemed family man and dedicated music educator; having proudly served in the Navy. Unfortunately he passed away unexpectedly due to health complications on July 23, 2023. Known as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, his warmth and enthusiasm for life touched many.

Naval Service and Musical Talent

John’s military service was marked by his distinctive musical talents. Playing the clarinet, he served in several band units stationed in Little Creek, VA; Charleston, SC; Great Lakes, IL, aboard the USS Blue Ridge in Japan and the Western Pacific Unit. His genuine kindness and faith were an inspiration to many.

John Sorensen’s Early Years and Commitment to Service

Born to Kathleen and James Sorensen in Racine, Wisconsin, John graduated from Washington Park High School in 1986 and soon after embarked on an eleven-year service in the United States Navy. He joined the Navy Reserves in 2013, becoming Chief Mass Communication Specialist and Senior Enlisted Leader with their Office of Community Outreach. serving as a respected mentor to many sailors.

Love, Music, and a Lifelong Pursuit of Education

John met Karen Lewicke during the early 1990s. They married August 2, 1996, and together raised three children: Erin, Kyle and Hannah. John’s love of music propelled him to earn a degree in Music Education at UW-Parkside in 2001 and eventually take up Wilmot High School Band Director duties until his passing away in 2018. He further honed his skills with a Master of Music degree from Carthage College in 2008.

Musical Contributions and Community Engagement

John’s love for music extended beyond his professional life. He was an active participant in several local ensembles, including the Kenosha Pops Band, UW-Parkside Community Band, Racine Concert Band, Swing Nouveau, Wisconsin Chamber Brass Quintet, and Southport Sound. John frequently performed at community events, notably the annual Kenosha Classic Cruise-In. In addition to his music, he was a dedicated Christian and an active member of Reach Ministries, a New Life Kenosha church.
