Moral Characteristics of prophets in Islam

All the prophets of Islam came with the message of Tawhid (oneness of God). They were the most pious and devoted people of Almighty Allah.

Humans have inhabited and colonized Earth since the advent of Hazrat Adam (Peace be upon him from heaven to Earth). Divine revelation has always been the source of guidance for humans to live according to the will of their Creator. The role of prophets in conveying the correct message without addition or subtraction was critical to this cause.

Allah Almighty mentions in the Qur’an:

ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتْرَا كُلَّ مَا جَاءَ أُمَّةً رَسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُ فَأَتْبَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ بَعْضاً وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ أَحَادِيثَ فَبُعْداً لِقَوْمٍ لا يُؤْمِنُونَ

“We sent Our messengers in succession: whenever a messenger came to a community, they invariably called him a liar, so We destroyed them one after the other and made them into cautionary tales. Away with the disbelievers!”

(Qur’an 23:44)

Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad

  Submission to God

So when they argue with you, they say, “I have given my will to God and those who follow me.” Tell. They will undoubtedly be guided if they submit, but you only need to communicate if they turn away. Moreover, God sees the servant best. (3:20)

He has no partner, and this [belief] was commanded [to obey], and I am the first of those who submit to [God].” (6:163)

 Friendly to people

By God’s mercy, you will be kind to them. They would indeed be scattered around you if you were stubborn and picky. So make excuses for them, ask for their forgiveness, talk to them about their problems, and trust God when you have decided. God loves those who trust Him.

 Deep concern for people

Indeed from among you, a messenger came to you. Your need is heavy for him. He cares deeply for you and is very kind and merciful to the believers.

Kind and merciful to believers

Those Who Believe in God and His Word

Say, O Mankind! I am God’s messenger to all of you to whom the kingdoms of heaven and Earth belong. There is no God but Him. So believe in God and His Messengers, uneducated prophets who believe in God and His Word, and follow Him to be guided.

Prophets Mentioned in Qur’an

All the prophets in Islam have been mentioned numerous times in the Qur’an, and their stories with their people provide a great source of knowledge and reflection for Muslims.

“We have sent revelation to you [Prophet] as We did to Noah and the prophets after him, to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon- to David We gave the book [of Psalms]- to other messengers, We have already mentioned to you, and also to some We have not. To Moses, God spoke directly.”

(Qur’an 4:163-164)

All prophets in Islam came with the message of Tawhid (Oneness of God). Only a difference in each Divine religion’s Shariah (commandments and laws) sets it apart. It should be noted that all prophets propagated the same message of Islam throughout all ages, Tawhid, which is the core of all Divine religions. Allah Almighty mentions in the Qur’an:

وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ رَسُولًا أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ

“We sent a messenger to every community, saying, ‘Worship God and shun false gods.’

 (Qur’an 16:36)

God-fearing:

When our manifest signs are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Me will say, ‘Bring another Qur’an or change it.’ I follow what is revealed to me. Indeed, if I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of the great day.

 (10:15)

Say, “If I disobey the Lord, I fear the punishment of the great day.”

 (39:13)

 (25:32)

He put his trust in God.

 (44:18)

 Hard on Infidels:

Muhammad, the Messenger of God, and his Companions are strict with the unbelievers and merciful to one another. You see them with their heads bowed and prostrate, seeking the grace and joy of God. Their marks [visible] on their faces by the effect of prostration.

Like a crop that sprouts and nourishes, it grows fat and perches on its stems, impressing those who sow it. God has promised forgiveness and great rewards to those who believe and do right.

 (48:29)

  Devotion to God

(48:29)

Surely your Lord knows that you spend almost two-thirds, or [sometimes] half or one-third of the night, with a group of people with you.

(73:20)

 Awesome characters

Blessed be your Lord. Your reward is the eternal reward. You are indeed a great person. You and they will see which of you is crazy. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His ways and best knows those who are guided.

Characteristics of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham)

  Righteous:

Moreover, who would renounce Abraham’s faith but those who deceive themselves? We have chosen him in the [present] world, and he will be righteous hereafter.

We gave him good things in this world. In the hereafter, he will be one of the righteous.

We gave him the prophets of his descendants, Ishaak and Jacob, and We gave him the Scriptures, and We gave him the reward of this life. He will be righteous in the Hereafter.

Submission to God

When his Lord said, “Submit,” he said, “I submit to the Lord of all worlds.”

  Upright (Hanif)

Abraham was neither Jewish nor Christian. Instead, he was Hanif, a Muslim, not one of the polytheists.

Say it. So follow the beliefs of Abraham, Hanif. He was not one of the polytheists. Moreover, who has a better religion than one who surrenders his will to God and follows the faith of the virtuous Hanif Abraham? Furthermore, God received Abraham as a devoted friend.

I have turned my face to Him, who created heaven and Earth as Hanif, but I am not a polytheist.

(6:79)

Say it “Surely the Lord has led me to the right way, to the right religion, to the Abrahamic creed, to Hanif, who was not a polytheist” (6:161).

Abraham was an obedient nation of God, a Hanif, not a polytheist. (16:120)

We have revealed this to you. “Follow the creed of Ibrahim of Hanif. He was not a polytheist.” (16:123)

  Benefactor (Muscin)

Furthermore, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, justifying each one. We led Noah and his descendants David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses and Aaron ahead. Thus We repay our benefactor.

They made their vision come true! After all, do you repay your benefactor?

 Thus We repay our benefactors.

 Kindhearted (awwah)

Abraham asked his father’s forgiveness only to fulfill his promise to him. So when he found himself an enemy of God, he rejected him. Abraham was very kindhearted and forgiving.

Abraham was indeed generous; he was very kind and repentant.

Tolerance (Halim)

Abraham asked his father’s forgiveness only to fulfill his promise to him. So when he found himself an enemy of God, he rejected him. Abraham was very kindhearted and forgiving.

Abraham was indeed generous; he was very kind and repentant.

 Penitent:

Abraham was indeed generous, very kindhearted, and repentant. (11:75)

Our Lord! We trust you and turn our repentance to you; you are the goal. (60:4)

 Obedience

Abraham was a God-obedient nation (or leader or exemplar), a Hanif, and not a polytheist.

 Grateful

Thanking him for his blessing, I chose him and led him on a straight path (16:121).

 Loyalty

He is undoubtedly one of our faithful servants.

Characteristics of the Prophet Isa (Jesus)

  Fair

He speaks with people in cradles and adulthood and becomes one of his righteous. (3:46)

And Zechariah, John, Jesus, Ilias – each among the righteous – (6:85)

Held in honor in the world and the afterlife

When the angels said, ‘O Mary, God gives you the good news of a Word from Him whose name is Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, held in honor in the world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near [to God].

 kind and caring

Furthermore, he did not let me be capricious and miserable to be kind to his mother. (19:32)

Other Prophets:

All Prophets were Men

Allah Almighty says in the Qur`an:

 وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِمْ

“And We sent not before you, [O Muḥammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message].”

 (Qur’an 21:7)

“And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities.” (Qur’an 12:109)

  All Prophets Receive Revelation

Allah Almighty mentions in the Qur`an:

 قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُوحَى إِلَيَّ

“Say, “I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed.” (Qur’an 18:110)

The Qur`an also narrates the words of the Prophets to their people in the following ayah:

 إِنْ نَحْنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ

“Their messengers answered, `True, we are only men like you, but God favors whichever of His servants He chooses. We cannot bring you any proof unless God permits it, so let the believers put all their trust in Him-.” (Qur’an 14:11)

Revelation is the most vital communication source between the Prophets and Allah Almighty. Angel Jibreel has brought down all revelations. Peace be upon him. Musa, Peace be on him, is an exception as he is famous for communicating directly with Almighty Allah. Apart from receiving the Torah from Jibril, Peace be upon him.

Almighty Allah says in the Quran:

“And Allah spoke [directly] to Moses in words.” (Quran 4:164)

Another occasion when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had a direct dialogue with Almighty Allah was the events of Al Islah and Almiraj.

“This is what the Lord of Mercy promised, and the messengers told the truth.”

 (Qur’an 36:52)
