Early Life and Playing Career
Birth and Education
Roly Meates was born in Dublin in 1936. He studied at The High School in Dublin and later pursued a career in dentistry. However, rugby was always his passion.
Playing Days
Meates began his rugby career as a prop playing for Bective Rangers, Dublin University, and Wanderers. He also played for Leinster and was known for his tenacity and skill on the field.
Coaching Career and Achievements
Trinity University Stint
Roly Meates’ coaching career commenced in 1966 at Trinity University, where he served for an incredible 30 years until 1996. His meticulous and dedicated approach earned him a reputation as a transformative figure in coaching.
Coaching Leinster and Ireland
Meates was Leinster’s head coach on two separate occasions – first during the 1970s and again from mid-1990s on. Furthermore, from 2000 he held onto this position of scrum coach until 2010.
Meates had the privilege of coaching Ireland from 1975-1977 and led their national team to victory against England at Twickenham during that period, including an historic 13-12 comeback win!
A Scrummy Legacy
Known as a scrum guru, Meates was instrumental in advancing the techniques and strategies related to scrums. He held scrum clinics throughout Ireland, passing on his knowledge to budding players and coaches.
Administrative and Leadership Roles
Meates’ contributions were not limited to coaching. From 2004 to 2005 he served as President of Leinster Branch of Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Additionally he held influential roles within various committees of IRFU as well as influential positions with organizations like Irish Universities Rugby Union.
Awards and Recognition
In acknowledgment of his tireless service and contributions to Irish rugby, Meates received several awards including the Leinster Rugby Special Merit Award and the Tom Rooney Award from the Rugby Writers of Ireland.
A Respected Educator
Apart from his rugby career, Meates was a respected physical education teacher. He worked at several schools throughout Ireland, including Presentation College Bray, where he was head of physical education.
Community and Charity Work
Meates was also actively involved in community service. He served as a trustee of the IRFU Charitable Trust and was committed to mentoring and education within the community.
