So You’re a Business Analyst in Singapore and Want To Get a job?

It’s nice to see a fresh batch of BAs coming into the industry every year! The business analyst profession has been going strong for more than 10 years now, and while numbers have fluctuated over the years, there is still a big demand for business analysts across many industries.

The good news is that there are lots of opportunities for career-minded BAs to find a job. But the even better news is that with a little careful planning, you can make yourself prepared and positioned to be head-hunted by companies near and far.

First, let’s take a look at what a business analyst does. You’ll probably recognize some of the following:

-Conducting business process re-engineering and analysis to figure out how a systems change will affect current business processes. This is basically “impact assessment” work, where we try to predict what might get broken if we make a certain change.

-Developing requirements for system changes or new systems. This is basically “spec writing” work, where we determine what the system should be able to do.

-Conducting data analysis and research to identify goals for a system. This is basically “business intelligence” work, where we figure out how well something is performing from a business perspective so that we can recommend changes or improvements where needed.

Here are some things that will help set you apart from the rest of the pack:

A deep understanding of your business domain. This is the “technical” part of your role – knowing how things work in-depth. For example, if you are an Oracle database administrator, then know that it’s not enough for you to just be able to configure databases and fix database performance issues. You would also want to be able to design databases, tune them for optimal performance, and maybe even architect new systems that use Oracle as the backend (and yes, there are plenty of business analysts out there with this kind of expertise).

A broad understanding of your IT environment. This is the “business” part of your role – understanding how different systems work together. For example, if you are an Oracle database administrator, then you would also want to know about the underlying network infrastructure that supports databases, your organization’s security policies for setting up new servers in production, or even how your organization makes decisions on when it updates its software versions.
