Study in Australia: what to take in your suitcase?

You already have everything ready and you have very little left to get on the plane to Australia. However, you still have in your head one of the questions that you usually ask us the most… What do I have in my suitcase to come to Australia?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated since everyone has specific needs, things they can do without and things that are essential. As for clothing, you must take into account when you arrive, what is your destination city and how long you are going to stay.

Next, we leave you steps so that you can pack your perfect suitcase to travel to Australia and leave nothing behind.

1. Write down the LIST with everything you can take in your suitcase for Australia.

It can be an Excel file where you write done all the objects you might need while studying in Australia. With this list you will surely not miss anything! But don’t take everything with you either, you won’t be able to close the suitcase.

2. Choose your destination city and see what is the most important thing you need to pack.

SYDNEY

Sydney has a reputation for being an expensive city, but that doesn’t mean you should bring your entire wardrobe. In this popular student city there are second-hand markets, such as Glebe Market, or stores like K-Mart, where you will always find good deals to buy what you need.

The city enjoys many sunny days, but it is important to note that it also tends to rain a lot and the wind usually accompanies the rain. So, don’t forget to bring good sun protection, good shoes and a windproof raincoat.

BRISBANE

The climate in Brisbane is tropical so above all you will need your swimsuit, flip flops and summer clothes. You will need to protect yourself from the sun so don’t forget to bring a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen.

In general… Little warm clothing! In Brisbane it’s only chilly and you will need warm clothes for two months in winter.

However, we recommend that regardless of the month in which your Brisbane adventure begins, you also bring a pair of sweatshirts and a coat in case you intend to travel south.

PERTH

The three essential items in Perth are: sun cream, sunglasses with good lenses and a cap (or hat).

This advice, valid for any Australian city, is especially important in Perth. In this city, the sun rises very early and at 10 in the morning you practically cannot leave the house without your glasses on. It is a very serious subject; Don’t forget that we are just below the hole in the ozone layer!

As far as clothing is concerned, don’t complicate your life too much because in Perth the weather is very good almost all year round. The summers are hot (it can easily reach 40º) and the winters are very mild, so you don’t need to bring a lot of warm clothing.

GOLD COAST

The Gold Coast experiences a humid subtropical climate, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. In summer there are storms, while winter is sunny, warm and quite dry.

Above all, you will need your swimsuit, some flip flops and summer clothes. Add a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to your suitcase to protect yourself from the sun.

If you land in winter, take some long pants, sweaters and a coat. You sure use it if you intend to travel south

MELBOURNE

Perhaps what surprises us most about Melbourne is the changing climate, the “Four Seasons in One Day” (four seasons in one day) that sometimes bring you upside down.

Do not discard that hand umbrella that fits anywhere, because, whether it is summer or winter, you are going to need it. In the cold months, the day usually starts cloudy and cold (bring a coat) and then it clears up or not, but what is not usually missing is the rain and the drop in temperatures.

Five-minute waterspouts or hours of rain, the fact is that you never know what to wear in the morning!

BYRON BAY

In Byron Bay temperatures are sunny throughout the year. Therefore, you will need more summer clothes than winter. Flip flops, swimsuit, a cap, sunglasses and sun cream.

Of course, do not neglect a sweater and long pants. During winter and early spring, at night or when the wind blows, temperatures drop and it can get cold.

3. Next, we leave you with a series of tips and general advice on your suitcase for Australia.

1. DO NOT FILL THE SUITCASE TO THE FULL.

Keep in mind that the less luggage you take, the more freedom you will have in the future if you want to travel to another country or do not want to check in a second bag when you return. With the time you spend in Australia, you will accumulate little things like souvenirs, new clothes, books… so, if you come with the maximum kilos, you will have to find an alternative for the return.

2. HOW MANY KILOS OF LUGGAGE DOES YOUR TICKET HAVE?

Before you start, check what is the baggage allowance that you can bring with your company to avoid unwanted surprises at the airport such as having to pay for excess weight. Many of us have come to Australia with 10 kg of hand luggage and 23 kg checked in… really, it’s not impossible!

3. TAKE YOUR RELEASED MOBILE.

Do not forget to bring an unlocked mobile. If you bring your mobile from your home country you will save buying a new one in Australia and thus you will be able to use any of the most popular companies here such as Telstra or Optus.

4. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRINT YOUR VISA.

You always ask if it is necessary to print the visa papers. The visas are electronic and are linked to the passports of each one, so, carrying your passport you have more than enough.

Of course, write down the postal address of the hostel/house where you stay the first few days. It may be the only thing they ask you.

5. WINTER CLOTHES? IT MAY NOT BE NEEDED.

Regarding clothing, it depends a bit on the city you are going to live in and the time you arrive. In Cairns, Brisbane or the Gold Coast, warm clothing is not necessary during any time of the year. Maybe a sweatshirt, but don’t bring your fleece or winter coat because it takes up a lot of space and you won’t use it again until you get back.

If you go to Sydney or Melbourne to spend the winter (from June to September) it is advisable to bring a coat as it is quite cold.

Do not take food with you… Never! Don’t even think about bringing food if you don’t want to face a possible fine and a lot of questions at Australian customs. Be sensible and leave the ham and tortilla tupperware at home.

7. WATCH WITH MEDICINES.

You won’t have any kind of problem with the most common medicines and you’ll be able to go through customs with them: painkillers, antihistamines, birth control pills… Don’t bring the entire pharmacy and there won’t be a problem. There are also medicines here and, although a little more expensive, it is not difficult to get the most common ones. If you follow any treatment that involves bringing a lot of medication, bring the medical prescription just in case.

Here we explain everything you need to know about traveling with medication to Australia.

Leave your fears and prejudices at home and come eager to learn, enjoy and live an incredible experience. If you do this, you will have a long way to go.

.

See you in Australia, mate!
