South African rapper and television presenter, Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, has been arrested again on allegations of rape and attempted murder. Here’s what we know so far about the current situation and the rapper’s previous brushes with the law.
Who is Jub Jub?
Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye was born on June 29, 1980, in Soweto’s Orland East. A former student of a performing arts school, he moved to New York on a scholarship to further his studies and hone his talent. He then embarked on his musical journey, adopting the stage name Jub Jub, which led to a successful career in the entertainment industry.
Charges Against Jub Jub
On 27 July 2023, Jub Jub was arrested and brought before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of alleged rape and attempted murder. The severity of the charges meant the court had to consider several factors before ruling on his bail application.
The Court Proceedings
Jub Jub’s legal team presented a bail application, asserting his right to be released from custody while awaiting trial. The court then conducted a detailed examination of the charges, his community ties, any potential interference with the ongoing investigation, and his financial situation.
Given the gravity of the accusations, the court had to evaluate whether Jub Jub posed a threat to society or might flee justice. After considering all factors, the court granted bail set at R10,000 (South African Rand), ensuring his return for future court appearances.
It’s important to note that the granting of bail is not indicative of the court’s belief in Jub Jub’s innocence or guilt. Rather, it’s a measure to balance the individual’s freedom with the need to ensure their appearance in court to face the charges.
Jub Jub’s Arrest: The Latest Developments
Jub Jub reportedly turned himself in to the authorities in Brixton on Thursday, 27 July 2023, after an arrest warrant was issued against him. The Gauteng police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, confirmed that the rapper cooperated with the police.
As per Masondo’s official statement, the charges against Jub Jub include rape, attempted murder, and assault, which are all grave offenses. While specific details regarding the timeline or circumstances of the alleged crimes are currently unknown, the legal proceedings will reveal more in due time.
While Jub Jub, like anyone else accused of a crime, is presumed innocent until proven guilty, these charges are serious and will be dealt with accordingly by the justice system.
