Who is Aishwarya and why #JusticeForAishwarya trending on social media?

Aishwarya is a Mathematics student of Lady Shri Ram College for Women in Delhi who committed suicide on 3rd November 2020. Her suicide note mentions about not wanting to be a burden to her family as the cost of education has become high and the lockdown has put more stress on her parents. But at the same time she didnot want to live a life without education.

Aishwarya’s suicide case has sparked widespread protests demanding justice for her and her death has been branded as ‘institutional murder’ on social media.

Aishwarya was receiving the INSPIRE scholarship from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Aishwarya’s scholarship was delayed by the government since March, which put her and her family under extreme financial pressure, said the report citing a statement issued by the Student’s Federation of India (SFI).

Lack of Infrastructure and Online Classes a financial burder to her family

Aishwarya told that her family could not expenditure on data packs for online classes which already placed an extra financial burden on her family. She further mentioned that she could not give her best to her studies as she did not have a laptop and study material was not available to her.

The issue of suicide is causing a stir on social media with the hashtag #JusticeForAishwarya, with many of them citing the incompetence of the central government.
