Why is LED high bay lighting essential for industries?

Industries require effective illuminance as these are task areas which function round the clock. The basic requirement of task areas is not just general lighting but also bright and focused light which facilitate the ongoing processes under that roof. Most of the industries are built in isolated spaces and almost each of them have very high ceilings. The height of these ceilings reach around 50 feet mostly which blocks almost any natural source of lighting. In such spaces, powerful and bright light fixtures are necessary to fill each and every spot with lighting. LED high bay lights are the primary light source and they are large powerful fixtures which throw light downwards from the ceiling to the floor.

What are high bay lights?

High bay lights are light fixtures for high ceiling areas, hence the name. These light fixtures are primarily manufactured in two designs which also determine their application. There is a huge variety of high bay lights present in the market. The two different design options are:

  • Linear high bays

Linear high bay lights feature a large, medium width frame with integrated LED chips. The length of the fixture varies from 2 – 8 foot long. The aluminum frame also has mounting brackets at the back of the fixture which support different mounting options at different heights.

  • Round high bays

Round high bay lights are also popularly known as UFO high bays due to their saucer shape. These are compact and the diameter is fixed in most cases. The aluminum frame has integrated LED or LED lamps which are either covered by reflector or lens. There is a hook present at the top of the fixture which allows mounting of this fixture at different elevation levels with the help of chains or cords.

Why do we recommend LED high bay lights?

For the past few decades for powerful bright lights the use of traditional lamps like HID and HPS are prevalent since they tend to produce brighter light than other options. Bright light being a priority made these lamps the go to choice of bulb for these fixtures which came with certain drawbacks such as their inefficiency to produce the required amount of light despite high consumption of energy. The light for high ceiling areas must be uninterrupted and require a certain layout to illuminate the space effectively despite the processes which are carried out in such spaces but HID/HPS lamps tend to disperse light in the surroundings and fail to illuminate the exact point of illumination despite receiving higher wattages.

They also have a very unreliable life span and require a lot of maintenance which becomes quite a chore in industrial spaces as it disrupts the usual work flow and requires technical assistance if the fixture ends up short-circuiting. There are many other ways in which these lamps have proven to be inefficient such as flickering, inability to work in emergency situations and forming direct glare which is also harmful for people working in that area.

In industries the recommended code of conduct follows accommodation of faculty workers and focuses on their comfort and health which has a direct impact on their productivity. Retrofitting or upgrading older lamps with LED lamps is highly recommended for business owners for several reasons including comfort of their workers. There are several reasons why LED high bay lights are the choice of fixture in today’s world and few of these reasons are as follows:

–      Higher lumens and uniform lighting layout

LED light fixtures require lesser wattage and produce more lumens. At the equivalent wattage supply to that of a traditional lamp they produce double the amount of brightness which is significant and efficient in many ways. The light coming from LEDs falls in a uniform pattern and it blends easily with the surroundings. These lamps have fixed beam angles available in a quantitative variation which allows the user to create an uninterrupted light layout for any space.

The layout is helpful in determining the number of fixtures, their lumen requirement and adequate placement to fill the space with adjustable and required amount of lighting respective to the layout.

–      Efficient and smart

LED light fixtures are proven to be 80% more efficient than any of the traditional options for several reasons, these fixtures have built in heatsink due to which they produce very little heat and dissipate it without causing any raise in temperature. The function of these lights is smooth and does not cause any hindrance due to any change in external conditions.

The fixture is IP rated for safety against dirt, moisture and emergency situations. It is reliable and also has emergency backup. Furthermore, these fixtures are user friendly and in most cases have remote control. This smart control option allows a user-friendly interface where the light is dimmable and also has motion sensors in some cases. This is quite efficient and saves a lot of energy in places where energy consumption is less such as storage areas.

–      Environment friendly

LED light fixtures are highly environment friendly as these fixtures function on green-lighting technology which does not interact with harmful radiation, produces soft glowy light which is easy on the eyes and is effective in reducing migraines and headaches. These lights do not contain any toxic chemicals like mercury so they are safe to recycle.

In conclusion, LED light fixtures are highly capable to match the pace at which the world is developing and meet the demands of state of the art facilities while also being highly sustainable. They have room for progression as well and as a primary component of any infrastructure they serve for long term.
