Minnesota and Vault Medical Service have teamed up in order to offer saliva COVID-19 testing at-home for anyone who lives here, regardless of symptoms.

Vault saliva testing kits are molecular tests that detect virus genetic material. They use polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is a molecular test. The most reliable tests to detect COVID-19 virus are PCR tests. It determines if you have COVID-19 and whether it can be spread to others. This test does not look for COVID-19 history. A positive result from PCR is considered to be a confirmed case.

If you need an accommodation for a disability or require translation services please e-mail [email protected].

There are no limits to how many saliva test kits you can order. Please take your saliva test as soon as it arrives and return it as soon as possible.

  • A second Vault test cannot be ordered until you have received the outstanding results.
  • Each person must sign separately if you order tests for multiple relatives members.
  • Vault customer service can be reached at 800-800-5698 if the test kit does not arrive.

You do not have to pay your insurance provider or testing provider for your COVID exam.

Your insurance company, the federal or state governments will cover all costs associated with this test. Insurance companies might send you an Explanation of benefits (or “EOB”) that explains the difference between what they paid and what was billed for this COVID test. You may be told that some of the costs are “patient responsibility.” This information is only for your information. This is not a bill and you don’t have to pay anything. Vault accepts the full amount of your insurance as payment.

About the test

  • All Minnesotans are eligible for free saliva tests It doesn’t matter if you have insurance.
    • You will need to submit your information to your insurance company so they can pay for your test. The state will pay the cost if your insurance doesn’t cover COVID-19 testing or is not sufficient. The state will cover your test if you don’t have insurance. Your COVID test will not be paid by your insurance provider or testing company.
    • You should not enter credit card information on Vault’s website. Please close your browser and then click the order link to try again. It is possible that you will need to open this link in a private or incognito web browser. Vault offers paid tests nationwide, so it is important that Minnesotans access the link above to get free tests. If you have been charged for a test, please send an email to [email protected].
  • These tests can be used by both children and adults. However, they may not work for children younger than 4 years old who may not have enough saliva. A test must be requested by an adult aged 18 or over for a child. A unique email address and account are required for each individual who requests a test. This could mean you will need to create an email address for each member of your household and minor children.
  • Saliva testing might not be appropriate for people with low saliva production such as children or those who have suffered a stroke.

How to pass the test

Before you take your test, do not eat, drink, or chew anything for more than 30 minutes.

When you are ready for the test, log into the Vault virtual waiting area to do a video interview with a Vault supervisor. Because there are many people taking the test, you may need to wait a while in the virtual waiting area. You will be given instructions by the supervisor and guided through the test.

The prepaid envelope that came with your test will be used to send the test to the Vault lab in Minnesota, New Jersey. Within 24-48 hours, your results will be emailed to you after the test has arrived at the lab.
