Easy home improvement ideas

Thousands of Brits started a DIY project in the coronavirus lockdown. Some tried to upcycle furniture, while others ventured into larger home improvement projects. DIY is a fantastic way to explore your creative and practical skills. You can step away from your desk and focus on making your house feel like a home. You just need a few power tools and some basic safety knowledge to get started.

SGS Engineering surveyed 1,000 homeowners and found a whopping 79% aimed to improve their property in 2021. Almost a half of respondents said they wanted to redecorate the inside of their home, particularly the kitchen and bathroom.

Here are a few easy DIY improvement ideas to make your home look better.

Paint some old furniture

Paint is the easiest way to add a new lease of life to your property. You can paint over scuffs, stains and strange marks to freshen up your space. Find a piece of wooden furniture that could do with some love and attention. First, you need to sand the piece until it’s smooth and free of any coatings. Dust it off, apply a primer and start painting. You could go for a pastel pink or rich green to completely change the look of the piece. If you’re painting a chair, re-upholster the cushions as well to finish the DIY.

Add some shelving

Floating shelves are all the rage right now. You could have a few shelves floating above your desk to store books and stationery. Or, you could have some shelves above your kitchen counter with a hanging plant and cookbook. Floating shelves add storage and style to your house – and they’re super easy to install.

Painting and wallpapering

Printed wallpaper is back on-trend, and you can have a lot of fun with it. You could spice up your bedroom with a jungle-themed wallpapered wall. Or, you could make your living room an art deco haven with metallic wallpaper. Try out the wallpaper trend in your home and start with one room. If you love the style, you can try it elsewhere too.

Sort out the radiators

Heating is essential in the winter months. You need to make sure your radiators are working properly before the first cold spell arrives. Bleed your radiators and double check your boiler is working efficiently. If there seems to be a problem, ask your plumber to take a look at it.

Give kitchen cabinets a new look

The kitchen is at the heart of the home. Between food splashes and daily use – your kitchen probably needs a little improvement. You could replace the countertops with a fresh piece of wood, granite or marble.

Take a look around your home and make some improvements.
