The Evolution of Mobile App Design – An UI/UX Guide for 2023

Mobile app UI/UX has come a really long way. With the age of machine learning upon us, the coding burden among developers has certainly eased, which has improved design speed and reduced time to market. But how else has mobile app design, particularly UI/UX, evolved over the years, and how can a startup app development company, for instance, stay ahead of the never-ending revolution? Our experienced mobile app development agency will let you in on the secrets that 2023 has and will bring our way:

1.Large font size is in fashion

We took a look at some of the mobile apps and websites of the top brands in the world this year, such as Tesla, Apple, and the likes, and we noticed one thing: everyone’s leaning towards providing a more immersive experience, particularly when it comes to large fonts.

A lot of big players are leveraging large fonts even for text, as well as other elements such as:

  • H1
  • H2
  • H3

So is bigger font size better or is it just a fad? Well, what we do know for sure is that bigger fonts improve the readability of your app, which is always a great thing for UX.

2.Include dark mode options

While the jury is still out on this one, what matters most here, especially from a developer’s perspective, is that most people seem to believe that dark mode is better for your vision.

It is for this reason that we advise every startup app development company that comes to us for guidance to include a toggle feature to switch between light/dark modes. With screen time increasing immensely in 2023, this simple UI tweak can work wonders for your application.

3.Avoid parallax scrolling

At one point, parallax scrolling was all the rage as mobile app UI/UX designers looked to up their aesthetics game. It for sure can add depth and make for more compelling storytelling, but 2023 is the time to ditch parallax scrolling or avoid it altogether.

Here’s why:

  • It is resource-intensive and thus can compromise app performance
  • When implemented poorly, more so on content-heavy mobile apps, readability goes down and the user experience can get exasperating
  • Individuals with vestibular disorders can be adversely affected

So is parallax scrolling worth it in 2023? Of course, many brands are pulling it off, provided it is used with creative flair and in moderation. To be on the safe side, we advise steering clear altogether.

4.Pay attention to Figma

When it comes to prototyping tools, Adobe Creative Cloud has been the go-to for many a mobile app development agencies. The smooth learning curve it provides across Adobe products has soared this preference, but the tide could yet shift with Adobe acquiring Figma.

The Figma vs Abode XD datatable has raged on for a long time, but that ended in late 2022 with this acquisition. Adobe itself has now even acknowledged Adobe XD’s inferiority to Figma, while Figma’s CEO has offered statements to suggest that Figma isn’t going anywhere any time soon. As a result, this could signal the beginning of the end for Adobe XD as the company also plans to lower investment in this and rather focus on elevating FigJam and Figma. So it therefore may be time to migrate before this eventuality catches up.

5.Prioritize disability-friendly designs

The European Accessibility Act is already in effect, although implementation could take a few more years. However, with accessibility standards set to be formalized as a legal obligation, our mobile app development agency advises you to start changing your approach to mobile app UI/UX design now before push comes to shove.

In terms of what the Act says, it simply requires that developers provide mobile or web applications that are accessible to the elderly and people with various disabilities. This is a requirement that will particularly apply to mobile apps in the public sector domain.
