After identifying the highest priority task (HPT), figure out how long it will take to complete and how many HPT tasks there are left on your list for today. Then divide the remaining time by the number of remaining tasks to see what percentage of time each one deserves in order to finish on schedule.

When setting goals for yourself, whether at work or home, it helps to think about what kind of person you want to become over time rather than simply deciding which outcomes are desired from any given situation. For example: “I want my character traits as a parent/spouse/employee/friend/etc, to improve over time.”

Think win-win.

This is the habit that I think is most important, especially when it comes to collaborating with other people. Win-win means that both parties are satisfied at the end of a deal. It doesn’t necessarily mean everyone gets exactly what they want, but there has been an agreement on how to move forward together, and each person feels like their interests have been taken into account and addressed.

This is different from win-lose where you’re competing with someone else for a finite resource–there’s only one winner in that situation no matter what (and usually it’s not you). In a win-win, every party still has options going forward because neither side gave up everything they wanted in order to get something over on the other party.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Understanding is the key to success, both personally and professionally. If you want to build relationships, improve your work, improve your personal life and improve your health, understanding is what it takes. It’s no different with finances, understanding is what will make you a better investor or businessperson. The sooner you understand this simple truth about life in general and investing specifically (and if you’ve already understood it) then the sooner you can start taking steps toward achieving those goals that matter most before they become distant dreams of long ago instead of realistic goals right now.
