A quick guide to spinning the Roulette wheel
Whether you’re planning on spinning the Roulette wheel for the first time online or in person down at your local casino establishment, there are a few things you might want to know before stepping up to the Roulette table.
With many players having only heard about online casino games such as Roulette, but never actually played, we thought now would be a good time for a quick guide to spinning the iconic wheel.
So, if you’re ready to know more about Roulette, and what you need to do for the wheel to begin spinning, read on.
Where did Roulette come from?
Believe it or not, the creation of the iconic wheel came from an experiment that didn’t go exactly to plan. In 1655, scientist and inventor, Blaise Pascal, set out to create the world’s first perpetual motion machine. Whilst his experiment didn’t go the way he wanted, his blueprints didn’t go to waste and became the first blueprints of the wheel we all know and play today, all around the world!
How do you play Roulette?
A game of Roulette consists of just a small number of things – a Roulette wheel, a Roulette table, a placeholder known as a dolly, a small ball, a dealer also known as a croupier and betting chips.
The aim of any game of Roulette is to correctly predict which pocketed compartment of the wheel the ball will land in.
To play, the dealer will announce the betting window open. In this timeframe, you’ll need to place any wagers you wish for the game ahead.
Placing a bet is easy enough to do – you simply need to place a betting chip or two in the box on the table that represents the number or colour of the pocketed compartment you believe the ball will land in.
When it’s time to get the wheel spinning, the dealer will announce the betting window closure and state that no further bets can be placed. The wheel will then be spun and the small ball entered into play.
For any keen-eyed players, you may notice that the wheel and ball spin in opposite directions. If the wheel is spun anticlockwise, the ball will be spun into play clockwise. By doing this, it keeps gameplay fair and unbiased, whilst also helping to create that iconic bouncing noise around the wheel.
Once the wheel comes to a complete halt, will the winning pocketed compartment be announced. To help make it clear where the ball has landed, the dolly will be placed within the box on the table that represents the pocket of the wheel.
After any players that correctly predicted the outcome are awarded their winnings, the table will be brushed clean of all betting chips and be set for a new game to begin.
What bets can you place in a game of Roulette?
There are many bet types you can place in order to wager your prediction, including these two bets:
- Straight Up – This is an inside bet that is the simplest bet to place. If you want to wager on your favourite or a random number, for example, you just need to place a betting chip(s) within the box that contains that number. Betting on a single number is known as a straight up bet, with betting odds of 35:1.
Black – If you’d rather bet on the colour of the pocket, rather than what number is within the pocket itself, you can place a black or red bet. If you think the pocket compartment will be black, you’ll need to place a betting chip(s) in the box that represents all black pockets. This is known as an outside bet with betting odds of 1:1.
