History of FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is an international football championship contested every four years by the men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The first edition was held in 1930 and has been held every year except 1942 and 1946 due to World War II.

Qatar was selected as the host country for the 2022 World Cup on 2 December 2010 at the 68th FIFA Congress in Zurich, Switzerland. A unanimous vote was decided after the United States, Qatar’s regional rival and traditional opponent in world football tournaments, withdrew its bid due to political instability and social unrest in the Middle East.

Qatar will be the first country to host both the World Cup and the Asian Cup finals.
